10 Things You Did Not Know about Steph Curry

Yes, you will be blown away more than you are already.

1. For every turnover made by Steph, he owes his mom $100.

Yes, he is the back-to-back KIA MVP of the NBA, the unanimous MVP this year, and is coming off of a title last year, but his mom is still trying to cut down his turnovers. She is kind and gives him some room to make some errors, meaning that after three turnovers, Steph must pay his mom $100 per each turn over after his third. He had seven turnovers the other night and it looks like Mrs. Curry is about to get herself some nice clothes…

2. The first time Steph and Kevin Durant, a fellow NBA all-star, met was at an AAU tournament when Steph was ten years old.

According to Durant, “I walk in the gym and this guy’s stepping across half court just pulling jump shots. Splash. Splash. And when we played him, he had like 35 and he was like 10 years old. I was like, who is this? And 10 years later … that was Steph Curry.” Little did these two know that this would be just the beginning of a rivalry, or that their teams would be playing each other in the Western Conference Finals for a chance to play for the NBA title.

3. Stephen is not his first name - it’s his middle name.

His followers on Instagram may know this, but his first name is Wardell, which used to be in his Instagram handle, @wardell30. He was named after his father, who played in the NBA. This means that “Steph Curry” is really Wardell Stephen Curry II...crazy!

4. He met his wife, Ayesha, when they were kids, but never connected back until they were in college.

Little did these two youth group classmates know that they would once get married and have possibly the cutest kids ever. It wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows when they reconnected, as Ayesha was skeptical of accepting Steph’s Facebook message to go on a date. Luckily she did, and they ended up walking along Hollywood Boulevard with some chai lattes. From that date on, those two were meant to be!

5. Steph wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps by not only sharing the same name, but going to Virginia Tech, just like Dell.

To say the least, the reigning MVP was upset with his lack of major division 1 program scholarships. He would have loved to go to Virginia Tech, just like his father, but that wasn’t the case. He had to choose between just the THREE division 1 schools that had offered him, and chose Davidson. Well, I think it worked out OK for this guy.

6. Everyone has a weakness, and Steph’s is his sweettooth.

He has a bad habit of eating candy, however, there is one specific one that demands he must eat it. Not even made in the US, Steph loves to eat Maynards, a candy from the US and Canada. I guess eating candy helps him out a little...clearly!

7. He brought his college team to their first Elite 8 since 1969.

You could probably call him a key role at Davidson, considering in almost 40 years the school hadn’t made it to the Elite 8, but with the presence of the future all-star, he brought them on a magical run through March Madness. And no, the team didn’t continue to succeed after Steph graduated; they actually haven’t made it past round two since 2008, or when Steph was there. There’s always hope for another Steph, right?

8. This all-star is a class act, on and off the court.

Steph had found a wallet in college with $160 and gave it back to the guy. He sent out a campus wide email, and he describes the incident as, “But my email had my first name, ‘Wardell,’ on it, so I don’t think the kid knew it was me until he showed up at my door. He was like, ‘you lit up Maryland in the NCAA tournament’ and then asked for my autograph. Pretty funny." He showed true character through this, not that he would need the money in the future because, well, you know.

9. You think he’d have the highest salary on the team, but instead, he has the FIFTH highest.

Behind Klay Thompson, Andre Iguodala, Andrew Bogut, and Draymond Green, Steph holds the fifth biggest salary. Granted, his salary isn’t too bad, at $11,370,786 for this season. He is a team player, so he’ll take whatever pay cuts needed to get better players.

10. Not only can this guy ball a little, but he can play some golf, too.

You may have heard about the time he golfed with the President this past summer on Martha’s Vineyard. He once shot two under par, as well. You can also catch him practicing his swing before some games to get loose, including in Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals against the Thunder on Wednesday night. He’s got to stay loose, right?
